Recently confirmed by the UFC, Petr Yan will defend his title against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 259. After their originally scheduled fight at UFC 256 was canceled, the two will now compete in a 3 title fight card at UFC 259 on March 6. ‘No Mercy’ took to social media to address Sterling on rumors that he has not had a place to train because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Aljamain Sterling has been one of the top performers at 135. He has been persistent in trying to get to the title shot, whether it be from his performances or social media. He and Yan have been constantly going back and forth with each other on Twitter.
Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling Twitter war continues
Originally the ‘Funk Master’ took to Twitter and said, “Rumor was that you didn’t have a place to train. Is everything ok now? I mean trained for Cory Sandhagen in a 1 car and 2 car garage. I hope you’re nice and cozy now in Florida, Mr. Mercy.”
The bantamweight champion was amused by his title challenger and replied, “Don’t worry about me, worry about your a**. I trained for a title fight in the garage, nothing special about it.”
Yan (15-1) is currently unbeaten in the UFC and is on a seven-fight win streak in the promotion. The Russian captured the vacant bantamweight title after Henry Cejudo’s retirement as he finished Jose Aldo in the fifth round. Now, the fight against Sterling will mark Yan’s first defense as champion in the UFC.
UFC 259 – 3 titles on the line
The UFC recently confirmed a huge card for the start of March as the promotion will go all out with a three title fight card event. The headline will feature middleweight champion Israel Adesanya moving up aiming to become a two-division champion as he faces newly crowned light heavyweight champion, Polish powerhouse Jan Blachowicz.
The co-main event will have the women’s GOAT and ‘Champ Champ’, Amanda Nunes defends her 145-pound title against Megan Anderson. Nunes will be a clear favorite as the most dominant force on the UFC’s women’s roster with Anderson getting a shot in a thin division.
Not surprisingly, 2021 already seems a lot like 2020, with fights getting canceled at the last moment. Now, it remains to be seen if all three title fights will stay on the card, with fans remaining hopeful of the event.
