After more than a year of widespread theater closures, delayed release dates, and tragic losses in the film community, Hollywood has been dealt another blow. Pacific Theatres and Arclight Cinemas, known particularly for Los Angeles’s legendary Cinerama Dome, will shutter more than 300 screens across California. “After shutting our doors more than a year ago, today we must share the difficult and sad news that Pacific will not be reopening its ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres locations,” the company Decurion, which owns the chain, said in a statement on Monday. “This was not the outcome anyone wanted, but despite a
Few movies, let alone production stills, have been able to capture the zeitgeist the way House of Gucci has. For weeks now, the upcoming film from Ridley Scott—starring Oscar-winning pop sensation Lady Gaga and Oscar-nominated perennial internet boyfriend Adam Driver, with Oscar winners Al Pacino, Jared Leto, and Jeremy Irons in supporting roles—has driven the internet to distraction based solely on the strength of its set photos. Look! There’s Adam Driver and Lady Gaga decked out in impeccable ’80s ski attire, posing together on the deck of some fabulous ski chalet. Gasp! A brunette Lady Gaga forcefully shoves a calzone
Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been tasked with revitalizing another iconic cinematic universe. On Friday, Lucasfilm announced that the Emmy-winning creator and star of Fleabag will star in the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, opposite the original Indy himself, Harrison Ford. Waller-Bridge has been lending her talents to historic film franchises as of late, voicing droid L3-37 in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story (another Lucasfilm production) and cowriting the forthcoming James Bond film No Time to Die.
“I’m thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers,” said the film’s director James
Melissa McCarthy has been a cop and a spy, which means it was probably inevitable that she would play a superhero. Which she does in her new film, Thunder Force (Netflix, April 9), a wan comedy written and directed by Ben Falcone, who is McCarthy’s husband. This is their fifth collaboration as star and director (and producers), a creative partnership that has yielded mostly bruised and mealy fruit—sustaining in a pinch but not terribly fulfilling.
My fruit metaphor is about as tortured as Thunder Force. The film, written by Falcone (marking his first solo writing credit), follows a now familiar
Chris Terrio is not pulling his punches anymore. For five years the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Argo kept his mouth shut about his work on the DC films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, even as scorn from critics and fans exacerbated already-painful behind-the-scenes memories. Worst of all, he agreed with many of their complaints.
He described the films that Warner Bros. released to theaters in 2016 and 2017 as incoherent misfires, undermined by corporate meddling, poor franchise planning, and tone-deaf decisions that prioritized costly VFX sequences over coherent storytelling. Terrio believes that Zack Snyder’s director’s cuts of both
We’ve all had this nightmare: the Earth is dying, so we’re forced to get on a spaceship full of teens on a one-way mission to a faraway planet. Such is the fate that befalls Richard (no relation), the saturnine scientist played by Colin Farrell in the new thriller Voyagers (in theaters April 9). Writer-director Neil Burger’s film concerns Richard’s plight, but it is mostly about the kids engineered to be the grandparents of the future colonists of humanity’s new home. They are of vital importance and yet will likely never see the fruits of their labor—a difficult pill for anyone
Allegations of workplace abuse and misconduct are once again swirling around mega-producer Scott Rudin. For its April 7 cover story, The Hollywood Reporter interviewed a handful of former Rudin assistants and employees, delving deep into myriad allegations of misconduct and abuse they faced while working at his behest. Former Rudin assistant turned Queen & Slim producer Andrew Coles, for instance, recalls an incident in which Rudin allegedly broke an Apple computer monitor on an assistant’s hand, sending them to the emergency room.
“We knew a lot could happen,” Coles told THR. “There were the guys that were sleeping in the office,
This time last year, Eric Andre couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. The world was in lockdown; the fifth season of his late night rave of a series, The Eric Andre Show, was months away. And the prank movie he had poured six years of his life into, Bad Trip, was no longer going to premiere at SXSW as planned. At one point, Andre says, things were looking so bleak that MGM’s Orion Pictures, which produced the movie, was trying to sell it to the now-defunct streamer Quibi.
“We were like no, no, no, no, no! Don’t do that!”
The origin story for the Oscar-nominated documentary Time is almost as astonishing as the film itself. Director Garrett Bradley met prison activist Fox Rich while working on a different project. She made what she thought would be a short documentary about Rich and her work on behalf of the families of incarcerated people. Then, as they were saying goodbye, Rich handed over a bag full of home videos—decades worth of footage capturing her life with her six children while her husband, Robert Richardson, was in prison.
Bradley, whose work straddles the line between art and commercial filmmaking, wove Rich’s home videos into
Movie marketers think of their work as a form of storytelling. They start by introducing the characters, usually by way of a poster or first-look shots. Then they build suspense with a teaser and start laying down exposition with media profiles, TV appearances, and full-length trailers. We’re now seeing what happens when this narrative, designed to turn a movie lover into a ticket buyer, is interrupted by a yearlong “To be continued….”
“It can seem like coitus interruptus,” said Peggy Rajski, dean of the film school at Loyola Marymount University and an Oscar-winning short-film director. “How long can you sustain peak
