Floyd Mayweather is the undeniable flamboyant star of modern boxing. With his exuberant in-ring prowess, Mayweather overpowered all of his opponents and stayed undefeated throughout his prolific boxing run. Even in the toughest fights of his career, ‘Money’ stayed right on top and relied on his unusual style to beat his opponents.
That said, none of his opponents could break through his defense to hand him an ‘L’.
Recently, the boxing great, ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard participated in Mike Tyson‘s Hotboxin podcast. Here, he spilled some beans on what he would do to beat Floyd Mayweather.
He said, “How to beat Floyd Mayweather? There is no one way to beat Floyd. I mean that I would have to pull out all my tools and figure out get a feel, a little fainter, just body shots.”
‘Pretty Boy’ fought a whopping 50 times in his career and had his arm raised on every single occasion. Right from his debut, Mayweather’s boxing style struck every boxing fan’s eye as no one could get a feel of what he presented. Hence, they weren’t able to pull out their tools to figure out a way to end his unbeaten run.
This is principally why Ray Leonard feels no one can beat the undefeated boxer with just one weapon in their artillery.
Is Floyd Mayweather the best defensive boxer of all time?
In the past, boxing fans have seen countless defensive boxers in the form of Pernell Whitaker, James Toney, and more, but Mayweather solidified his place and created his own legacy.
In his prolonged boxing stint, ‘Money’ barely ate a handful of power shots from his opponents. This is because he was able to dodge, block, and deflect the heat coming off his fellow opponents’ fists.
With swift ring movements coupled with his enigmatic power, Mayweather’s skillsets were too much to handle for his opponents.
Furthermore, throughout his career, Mayweather transitioned to multiple weight classes and won world titles across divisions. Hence, he may be able to lay the claim of being the best defensive boxer of all time.
