A fine drive should always be rewarded, and Sergio Perez received no better gift on Sunday in Bahrain. The Mexican won the Sakhir Grand Prix in dramatic circumstances. It also showed his will and passion to continue fighting until the end.
Perez obviously does not still have a seat for the F1 2021 season, which is a massive disappointment. Over the course of the season, he was linked to many teams, but nothing has materialized so far.
He has now spoken about possibly re-entering the fray again in 2022, should he fail to secure a seat for next year. However, after the impressive showing in the last few races, he has revealed his motivation to stay in the premier division of motorsports.
Sergio Perez believes it will not be a disaster because he can still come back in 2022
Speaking in the post-race press conference, Perez stated, “I’ve always said about ’22 there was a race, taking a year out at this stage of my career that I am.”
“I never know what’s going to happen, if I will have the will to come back for doing that, bad year I decide to stop but after today, after the last couple of races, I’m sort of determined to be here, either if it’s next year or the year after.”
Various reports had suggested that Ferrari wanted to take on Perez as a reserve driver for next year. However, the 30-year-old feels that taking a year off and returning to the sport full-time in 2022 might not be the worst idea.
“I already have some good options for ’22 so my best option is obviously to keep going on next year but if I have to stop, then it’s not a disaster, I can come back in ’22,” concluded Perez.
Red Bull is the only remaining option for Perez for the 2021 season
The drivers’ market carousel is now reaching a stopping point after a hectic season. Haas and Red Bull remained as the only options for Perez, but even the former has now confirmed their drivers’ lineup.
One can only hope that Red Bull, who look to be in a dire need for a good second driver, give a phone call to Perez. For otherwise, it would be an immense shame to lose such an outstanding driver of his caliber from Formula 1 next season.
