Sami Zayn got a chance to become the challenger for the Universal Championship on WWE SmackDown’s January 8, 2020 episode.
This would have been the perfect opportunity for him to get back at Roman Reigns after ‘The Tribal Chief’ schooled him on Twitter.
As a part of the number one contender’s Gauntlet Match, Zayn started off with Rey Mysterio on the opposite side of the ring.
Considering that Zayn was the Intercontinental Champion until recently, the audience expected him to put up a brilliant performance. Unfortunately for him, Mysterio defeated Zayn in under a minute. It took Mysterio two kicks and a jump from the top of the ropes to eliminate Sami Zayn.
Zayn’s speech before he entered the ring lasted longer than the time he lasted inside the ring.
Big E secured the IC Championship after defeating Sami Zayn
On the last episode of 2020, the blue brand stripped Zayn off his Intercontinental Championship. Big E defeated Zayn in the lumberjack match and secured the title.
There were moments during that match when Zayn tried to escape the ring to keep the belt; however, the lumberjacks kept carrying him back to the ring. Finally, Big E mauled Zayn and became the champion.
Is WWE trying to bury Sami Zayn?
WWE taking Zayn’s championship and then humiliating him with an under-the-minute loss raises eyebrows. It almost appears the company is trying to bury Zayn by embarrassing him.
While there is no specific reason for the company to do so, Zayn has called out the company on various occasions for belittling him. It’s possible the company has had enough and is now showing Zayn how brutal it can get if a Superstar gets in WWE’s bad books.
