Consensus UFC middleweight GOAT Anderson Silva spoke to MMA Junkie in a virtual media scrum to talk about his boxing return. ‘The Spider’ will step under the bright lights of the boxing ring against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on June 19. The bout takes place at the Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico in a 10-round main event.
Anderson Silva stepped away from MMA after competing in his final UFC main event against Uriah Hall in October. Despite holding his own, he was eventually TKO’ed in the fourth round and had to step away at nearly 45-years of age. He’s 1-1 as a boxer and hasn’t competed in the discipline since 2005. The first time he laced up the boxing gloves as a pro was back in 1998.
Anderson Silva opens the door to future boxing bouts
While ‘The Spider’ is not overlooking Cesar Chavez Jr, he’s also got one eye on making a sustained run in boxing. Additionally, he expanded on wanting to finally face Roy Jones Jr. in the ring. The booking of the aforementioned fight was attempted on many occasions, however, to no avail.
“Yeah, of course it’s possible. I love this sport. I love boxing. And, yeah, it’s possible. We’ll see.
“Yeah, absolutely, because I talked about fighting Mr. Roy Jones Jr. for many, many years ago when I started fighting in the UFC,” Silva said. “I think now is coming closer to this reality and let’s go see. My focus is just for this fight now and then let’s go see in the future.”
During Silva’s illustrious reign as the UFC’s middleweight champion, he continued to entertain a scrap against Jones Jr. Given the fact that Roy Jones Jr. recently came out of retirement at the age of 51 to fight, the bout may actually be booked now.
It’s unclear whether it could take place under the Triller banner, however, there will be an interest in making the fight happen. However, it all boils down to Silva’s performance against Julio Cesar Chavez on June 19. If he turns in a dominant performance, there’s no saying what the future might hold.
