Kamaru Usman is building up his legacy as one of the greatest welterweights of all time. However, this story is playing concurrently with Jorge Masvidal’s bid to prove his career-doubters wrong by winning a title this deep into his UFC career. Masvidal failed last July when he challenged Usman on six days’ notice, but how would he fare with a full camp?
That is what Usman wants Masvidal to prove as well. Hence, he has offered to fight ‘Gamebred’ after he has had a full camp to prove his superiority over the kickboxer. He reinforced his belief in his skill-set over Masvidal’s in an ESPN interview.
“He knows he can’t beat me. There’s just certain guys that know, god damn I can’t beat that dude. He just doesn’t have the skills to beat me. Now can a freak accident happen on any given day? Absolutely. But 10 times out of 10, I beat him badly.”
“I didn’t hold him up against the cage last time, he stayed there. Because he knew that he just didn’t have the energy to be in the middle with me… He stood straight up in that. I didn’t hold him up against the fence, so let’s clarify that.”
Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal II: How does this rematch look?
Kamaru Usman is genuinely elite. While Masvidal is dangerous and was underrated for the long majority of his career, he has been built up maddeningly since he knocked out Ben Askren in 5 seconds. That got him a UFC main event in Madison Square Garden against Nate Diaz in a blockbuster PPV.
However, the welterweight champion has a skill-set that few fighters can figure out. Masvidal has genuine one-shot knockout power, but Usman is one of the best defensive fighters in the UFC. That is what has helped him become a dominant champion and beat Masvidal at UFC 251. That has just built his confidence for this possible rematch.
