In a dominating 12-round affair, Billy Joe Saunders bagged the unanimous decision to win over Martin Murray. Saunders entered the boxing ring after almost a year’s lay-off and brushed aside qualms of ring-rust with a disciplined performance.
The British boxer improved to 30-0 in his career, but the big query is, who is next for this middleweight stalwart?
In a post-fight media interaction, Saunders and his manager Eddie Hearn emphasized at Canelo Alvarez for a next big fight. Promoter Hearn felt if the pandemic had not happened, Saunders would have taken on Canelo months back.
Saunders said, “They all (Canelo, GGG, Smith, and Andrade) want to fight me, but none of them signed no contracts! So they want to fight me that much. Get your pens out and get it signed.”
“Any super-middleweight out there, let’s get it on. People can criticize me all they want but the main thing is I’m here to fight. Whenever you want to ring me, ring me (pointing towards Hearn). I’ll be ready for new year but it has to be a big fight. A big name to come out of the fight if I’ll get knocked out and get beat, you’re a better man but it’d be completely different on the night.”
It is speculated that Saunders will face the winner of the December 19 Canelo Alvarez vs Callum Smith fight. However, there was not much talk revolving around Gennady Golovkin ‘GGG’ as his next opponent. Golovkin will face Kamil Szeremeta on December 18 in the USA.
Which is an ideal fight for Billy Joe Saunders?
Joe Saunders with his cracking 30-0 records among the finest middleweights in the sport. His manager Eddie Hearn believes he will have to take up real ‘big fights’ in order to look back and be content with his career. To achieve this aim, the British boxer will have to take on some veterans of the sport present in his roster.
If Canelo wins on December 19 against Callum Smith, then Saunders’ promotion might be keen on booking the fight for next year. Furthermore, if Canelo loses, then Eddie Hearn would approach Callum Smith to set this bout with the WBO super-middleweight Champion, Billy Joe Saunders.
Fans will be elated to see Saunders share the ring with the veteran of the sport, Canelo Alvarez. This fight would be risk abundant with an equal amount of rewards for Saunders.
